Is Italy a good place to visit in summer?
SÌ! Summer holidays in the Italian Alps and Dolomites are an excellent choice, with plenty to see and do. Whether you're looking for numerous tracks and trails for hiking and biking, lakes and pools for swimming, or seeking to get hearts racing with paragliding, Via Ferrata, ziplining, and rope courses, Italy’s summer holidays have it all.
And, of course, there’s always the incredible food. Pasta, pizza, polenta, gelato… the list goes on and on!
What month is the best to visit Italy?
For hiking and other great outdoor activities, June, July, and August are the best months to visit Italy during the summer.
However, if you’re after cooler weather and fewer crowds, then May, September, and October are the best times to book, with the autumn colours offering beautiful panoramic views.
How hot is Italy in summer?
The hottest months in the Italian Alps and Dolomites during summer are July and August, with an average high temperature of 27 to 32°C.
Later in September and October, expect average highs of around 19 to 25°C.
Can you swim in in Italy in early/late summer?
Yes! Weather-dependent, there's always the opportunity to enjoy a lakeside swim on an Alps and Dolomites summer holiday in Italy. We recommend heading to Corvara's Biotope lake for a post-hike cool off, or swimming and kayaking in Lake Garda for an Italian escape like no other!
May and June see average water temperatures at Biotope Lake in Corvara reach 18-27°C, while September still sees temperatures of 14-25°C.

How many days in Italy are enough?

Popular times of the year, such as the school summer holidays, can see the prices of accommodation and flights rise due to demand, but there are plenty of easy ways to snag a bargain for your summer trip to Italy.
We recommend considering holidays in May and June, or September and October, to enjoy warm temps and sunny skies without the crowds. Alternatively, check out some lesser-known resorts such as Canazei and Selva Val Gardena to discover some great hidden gems.
What to wear in the mountains in Italy in summer?
Whether you’re walking, biking, or looking for adrenaline-packed fun, we recommend packing for typically warm temperatures with comfortable, breathable clothing. Consider sports tops, shorts, and shirts, as well as dresses for dining out. We also suggest bringing a waterproof jacket in case of unexpected light mountain showers, as well as a lightweight fleece for summit hikes.
